A Revised Ode To Turtlenecks

$

This ode to turtlenecks was great! But it was missing something very important: actual turtle necks.

Turtlenecks resemble actual turtle necks.

Turtlenecks resemble actual turtle necks.

Turtles do this nifty thing where they can pull their heads into their shells. The skin on their neck is loose to accommodate this anatomical quirk and takes on a folded-collar-like appearance when their necks are partially retracted. Remember this when you don your sweaters this season.

Via sandfiredragonranch.com

Some turtles fold their neck to the side.

Some turtles fold their neck to the side.

There are two extant suborders of turtles: Cryptodira and Pleurodira. Cryptodira (lit: hidden neck) pull their necks straight into their shell, but Pleurodira (such as the handsome fellow shown above) retract their heads partway before folding them off to the side. Pleurodira are commonly found in the southern hemisphere, so it's unlikely you'll run into a side-necked turtle in the United States unless it's someone's pet.

Common snapping turtles have long necks.

Common snapping turtles have long necks.

Left: A snapping turtle with its neck partially retracted. Right: A snapping turtle with its neck extended. Basically, common snapping turtles usually kept their heads close to their bodies in the hopes of surprising prey by that wander in range of their snap. Don't be fooled; their necks are typically as long as the length of their shell, and they can twist them backwards if they're so inclined. That's why the best place to hold a snapping turtle is by the back shell near the tail (and never by the tail!) so you're not in range of its neck and powerful jaws.

Alligator snappers have short(er) necks.

Alligator snappers have short(er) necks.

Which, of course, means they can't surprise their prey by suddenly lunging quite as effectively as their common snapper cousins. To make up for their short necks, alligator snappers have a worm-like appendage in their mouths that they use to lure their prey closer. When they're hungry, they sit in the mud with their mouths wide open and wriggle their tongues. It's like fishing, and it's pretty damn effective.

Only about 150 Chinese yellow-headed box turtles exist in the wild. The Bronx Zoo now has five.

Julie Larsen Maher/WCS

In an effort to prevent extinction, the Wildlife Conservation Society is building up a colony of these Chinese yellow-headed box turtles at the Bronx Zoo.

The turtle species once lived in eastern China, but became endangered due to medicine, pollution, habitat loss, and pet trade, according to the WCS.

Meet Audrey: A Special Turtle's Story

Audrey spent the first 20 years of her life living in a bucket. Today she’s the spokes-turtle for LittleResQ, a turtle rehabilitation and rescue organization located out of Toronto.

But first, a baby turtle:

But first, a baby turtle:

Cute, right? They're hard to resist at this age. Brightly-colored and no bigger than a coin, hatchling red-eared sliders are sold illegally throughout the United States and Canada. You've probably seen them in buckets, hawked by street vendors who pay little attention to their health and well-being. They're in it to make a quick buck, after all. They don't tell you that this little baby will grow up quickly. They don't tell you how to care for him. This is a serious problem, and one that endangers the welfare of thousands of reptiles every day.

Via redearedslidercare.net

This is Audrey:

This is Audrey:

Audrey was born around 1990 and spent most of her life in a bucket. She subsisted on egg whites and had little space for exercise. Over time, her shell started to look strange: individual scutes warped in lumpy, asymmetrical ways and her carapace twisted upwards like an umbrella caught in a storm. Audrey needed help, but didn't get it for twenty years.

Via Facebook: audreyres

It's an unfortunate misconception that the tiny turtles sold in buckets remain tiny. In reality, they grow, and they grow quickly. The initial years of growth are especially crucial to a turtle's health. Turtles have many requirements: heating, for one, because they are ectothermic and cannot self-regulate their own temperature. To translate: their immune systems depend on an external heating source, such as a basking light, a heater, or direct sunlight. They need specific diets, rich in calcium, and UVA and UVB lighting to provide them with the ability to metabolize that calcium. If they don't, turtles can end up with soft shells or deformities like Audrey's, which are sadly all too common.

Via Facebook: audreyres

Let me just drive home the seriousness of this type of abnormality: Audrey's shell is part of her skeleton. The warped bone constricts and squashes her internal organs. Her growth and diet must be monitored carefully to minimize further damage.

Do you have a baby turtle or know of a friend who has one? Baby turtles are often impulse buys. Like any pet, you should thoroughly research its needs before taking it home. Because look: Audrey was once a cute little hatchling too.

Turtle Escapes After 70 Years

Willie is on the loose in Windsor Terrace, Brooklyn. “He just got out somehow.”

pbs.twimg.com

Ed Schloeman's parents purchased four eastern box turtles in the early 1940s, right around the time Schloeman was born.

When his parents died 15 years ago, the surviving turtle, Willie, went to Schloeman, who still lives in the Windsor Terrace neighborhood he grew up in, and who is now 70 years old.

"When my parents passed away I received that wonderful gift," he told BuzzFeed.

Schloeman kept Willie, who's about seven inches long with the species' distinctive brown and yellow shell, in a "caged environment" in his back yard on East 2nd Street, a sloping street a block from Green-Wood Cemetery. But late last year, Willie vanished.

"He just got out somehow," said Schloeman, who plastered the neighborhood with "Wanted" flyers, one of which BuzzFeed noticed on the door of the nearby Sean Casey Animal Rescue.

"He’s probably hibernating someplace somehow," Schloeman, who sells fire suppression systems from his Brooklyn home.

Schloeman, a Vietnam veteran, is also active in a charity that brings Transcendental Meditation to soldiers suffering from post-traumatic stress.

"Hopefully if he unhibernates in April, a neighbor will find him," he said.

Schloeman said Willie has no particular personality, and didn't appear personally anguished over his disappearance.

"You can’t get close to a turtle," he said.

Turtle Rescue Center Releases 100 Happy Sea Turtles

Sometimes turtles need a helping hand.

On Dec. 18, 2013, Sea Turtle, Inc., a sea turtle rescue center on South Padre Island, Texas, released around 100 Atlantic Green sea turtles that had been stranded during the previous week's cold front. Because temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico had dropped too quickly, the sea turtles had become either lethargic or cold-stunned, and many were washed ashore. Due to the efforts of Sea Turtle, Inc. volunteers and concerned citizens, only four sea turtles were reported dead. The rest were rescued to be released at a warmer time. The following photos depict that release.
