This enormous (and yet, underweight) leatherback sea turtle got stranded in the right place at the right time. Rescued by IFAW and Mass. Audubon, rehabbed and released by the New England Aquarium, he’s now on the move with a new lease on life. This could be only the third time in history for a successful leatherback sea turtle rescue and release! Here’s how it went down:

Dog walkers spotted the turtle in a marshy, muddy area on outer Cape Cod. Because of the tides, the turtle rescue teams at Mass. Audubon and IFAW had to wait until the next morning to rescue the 655-lb turtle.

New England Aquarium / Via rescue.neaq.org

The big guy was transported to the New England Aquarium's Animal Care Center so the Rescue Team could rehabilitate the turtle, pump it full of medicine and other good stuff. The turtle was about 200-lbs underweight!

New England Aquarium / Via rescue.neaq.org

The rescuers took blood samples and began treatment right away. They worked in near silence so as not to stress the animal out.

New England Aquarium / Via rescue.neaq.org

After a couple days, the turtle was well enough to be released back into the ocean. So with the help of a forklift and a couple dozen rescuers, they hefted the turtle onto a lobster boat and headed a couple miles out to sea. NOTE: Check out the satellite tag on his back!

Science To Turtles: "You're Built Backwards!"

Why? Because turtles can breathe through their butts and pee from their mouths. Thanks for letting us know this important and world-shattering news, scientists!

Meet the "bum-breathing" Fitzroy River Turtle

The Fitzroy River Turtle, native to Australia, is locally known as the "bum-breathing turtle." Why? Because when researchers observed this species in captivity, they were astonished to see sand and particles swishing about the turtles' tails. Upon closer inspection, the scientists discovered the Fitzroy turtles had two enlarged bursae that allowed them to acquire aquatic oxygen via the cloacal opening. Most turtles can acquire oxygen this way, incidentally. Bum-breathing allows them to extend their dive time.

By 2002, Toni E. Priest and Craig E. Franklin figured out that the Fitzroy turtle took bum-breathing to extreme levels. Common snapping turtles, for example, take in 4% of their oxygen through their cloacal bursae. In contrast, Fitzroy turtles use significantly more aquatic oxygen: 41% of their overall intake!

Cue the bad breath jokes now, you guys. For the record, this is what bum-breathing looks like:

Today's newsflash: Chinese Soft-Shelled Turtles pee through their mouths.

Chinese soft-shells spend a lot of time with their heads underwater, and damn it, scientists just had to know why. It's possible that the scientists regretted this endeavor in the end, because they discovered that the turtles were excreting urea via their mouths into the water.

That's right. They were peeing through their mouths.

Look, soft-shell turtles have kidneys like you and I, so they're capable of urinating normally. It's just that they only do this 6% of the time. You should probably stop thinking about the other 94% now. But if you're a real masochist, you can read more about this in The Journal of Experimental Biology.

Anyone want to give this cutie a kiss?

Turtle Rescue Center Releases 100 Happy Sea Turtles

Sometimes turtles need a helping hand.

On Dec. 18, 2013, Sea Turtle, Inc., a sea turtle rescue center on South Padre Island, Texas, released around 100 Atlantic Green sea turtles that had been stranded during the previous week's cold front. Because temperatures in the Gulf of Mexico had dropped too quickly, the sea turtles had become either lethargic or cold-stunned, and many were washed ashore. Due to the efforts of Sea Turtle, Inc. volunteers and concerned citizens, only four sea turtles were reported dead. The rest were rescued to be released at a warmer time. The following photos depict that release.

Via Facebook: SeaTurtleConservation

Around 1:30 p.m., onlookers gathered on a stretch of shore between the Isla Blanca Park's southern pavilion and South Padre Island's algae-covered jetties, anxiously awaiting the sea turtles' arrival.
